Placing a sportsbet is a game of skill. The challenge is to gather and analyze as much information as you can about a game, weigh the probabilities of each team winning, and subsequently compare your opinion to the oddsmaker's.
While luck may be a deciding factor in the outcome of any single game, and will inevitably go against the bettor on occasion, it will balance out in the long run.
Being a consistent winner in sports betting is not about luck but whether the bettor is prepared to invest the time and effort to become knowledgeable about the sports he bets on, whether he can weigh all the factors in a cool, objective fashion, and whether he adopts a consistent, disciplined, long-term approach to betting.
The bookmaker is simply a middle-man who operates on a small profit margin and, ideally likes to see half the money wagered on one team and half on the other, assuring a profit.
If too much of the money goes on one team, the bookmaker will move the line or point spread to encourage bets on the other team in an effort to balance his book. The person the bettor is attempting to beat is the oddsmaker, and the oddsmaker's views on each team's chances.
Just by flipping a coin, bettors will be right 50% of the time. At odds of 10/11, only 52.4% of the bettor's bets have to win for him to overcome the bookmaker's profit and break even, so he only needs a very small edge to become a winner.
So bettors must do their homework and bet selectively. 55% winning bets is definitely achievable and 60-65% is a realistic target. At those levels, the sports bettor will have an extremely profitable and enjoyable hobby.

The highly anticipated fight between reigning UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Alex Pereira and top contender Magomed Ankalaev is set for Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. This matchup promises to be a thrilling encounter as both fighters bring a wealth of experience and unique skill sets into the octagon.
Alex Pereira, known as "Poatan," has established himself as one of the most formidable strikers in mixed martial arts (MMA) today. With a professional record of 12 wins and 2 losses, Pereira is renowned for his explosive striking ability, particularly his powerful kicks and knockout power. His significant wins in the UFC include three successful title defenses, showcasing his dominance in the light heavyweight division. Pereira's background as a two-time Glory Kickboxing Champion further exacerbates his striking prowess, allowing him to maintain a unique edge over his opponents.
Magomed Ankalaev, on the other hand, is a well-rounded fighter with a professional record of 19 wins, 1 loss, and 1 no contest. His fighting style is characterized by a solid wrestling background coupled with striking capabilities that pose a threat to any competitor he faces. Known for his strategic gameplay and relentless pace, Ankalaev is unbeaten in his last 13 fights, which underlines his growing stature in the light heavyweight landscape.
Alex "Poatan" Pereira is the favorite to win the match. Here are our latest odds:
The style contrast in this bout is particularly compelling. Pereira will approach the fight seeking to establish his range and utilize his striking to wear down Ankalaev. His ability to kick will be paramount; low leg kicks might help to hinder Ankalaev's mobility, thereby creating opportunities for high-impact strikes. Additionally, Pereira's deficit in grappling can be minimized if he maintains the fight in a standing position where he can leverage his striking arsenal effectively.
Ankalaev, conversely, will aim to impose his wrestling skills early on. His game plan likely revolves around securing takedowns to nullify Pereira's striking advantage and to assert his control on the canvas. Historically, fighters who have managed to take Pereira down successfully have found it easier to dictate the pace of the fight. Hence, implementing a strong wrestling strategy will be crucial for Ankalaev's success.
This fight holds significant implications for both fighters within the context of the light heavyweight division. For Pereira, successfully defending his title for the fourth consecutive time would solidify his status as one of the notable champions of his era and enhance his legacy in the UFC. Notably, his streak of title defenses has come within a remarkably short time span, emphasizing the urgency and importance of this fight for him.
For Ankalaev, a victory over Pereira not only ensures the capture of the coveted light heavyweight title but also validates his ascent through the division and avenges his past disappointments in title contention scenarios, notably his split draw with Jan Blachowicz.
The Pereira vs. Ankalaev matchup is shaping up to be a historic clash of styles, where the striking finesse of the champion will square off against the strategic grappling of the challenger. With both fighters motivated to win, the stakes are immensely high, and the fans are expected to witness a spectacle as two of the best light heavyweights in the UFC compete for supremacy. As they prepare for their battle at UFC 313, the outcome remains uncertain, but the excitement surrounding this event continues to grow as the fight date approaches.
